Turnstones

Turnstones at St.Ives.

Some images of turnstones taken last weekend on the Cornwall Wildlife Trust Photographic Group field trip to St.Ives.

Much time was spent lying flat out on the harbour trying to get wide angle images of the birds in their environment... or should it be in our environment.

Whichever is correct they've learnt to spend their winters close to man and to scavenge where they can.

I still struggled to get 3 birds all looking the same way and spent so much time on my belly that I forgot I had my sandwiches in my chest pocket... they were rather flatter than they started out!

Swans getting romantic

Mute swans in their classic courtship "heart shaped" pose

In the flight path

Spring is in the air for the birds at the moment as the day length increases and these swans were displaying to one another and making that classic "heart shaped" pose with their long necks as they performed their courtship dance.

In the lower photo this one was just heading toward someone with food and I just happened to be in the way!

Early birds at Godrevy

Cornish Chough

We had an early start to photograph birds and landscapes at Godrevy near Hayle this morning.

After watching the sunrise and illuminating the lighthouse we spotted a lone chough feeding on the clifftop. I note also that it hasn't been ringed.

I was delighted to get some shots of this the emblem of Cornwall!

Next came a couple of kestrels that were feeding on worms on the soft clifftop, they were most accommodating and allowed quite close shooting.

Finally after some poor shots of ravens I got a nice few of a skylark feeding on the vegetation inland from the cliff edge.

Our fabulous Camel estuary in winter sunshine.

The Camel estuary at St.Georges Well near Padstow.

A quick hike out to the estuary yesterday lunchtime produced some nice shots in stunning winter light.

We tend to forget the qualities of good light in photography after having had to endure such grey days during this winter.

The shot above was a composite from 10 shots taken vertically to produce a deeper panoramic image.

All the others are straight shots including some shots of Padstow harbour which show it looking at it's best.
